Frequently Asked Questions
What is Morse code?
Morse code represents letters, numbers, and punctuation as sequences of short signals (dots) and long signals (dashes). It was developed in the 1830s–40s for telegraph communication and is still used today in amateur radio, aviation navigation beacons, and as an accessibility input method.
What are the timing rules?
A dash is 3 times the length of a dot. The gap between dots/dashes within one letter is 1 unit, the gap between letters is 3 units, and the gap between words is 7 units. The "Play Audio" button reproduces these timing ratios.
How do I write spaces between words in Morse?
Use a forward slash / surrounded by spaces to separate words, e.g. ... --- ... / .... . .-.. .--. for "SOS HELP". Letters within a word are separated by a single space.
Is Morse code still used?
Yes, though rarely for everyday communication. It remains part of amateur (ham) radio licensing culture, is used in some maritime and aviation identification signals, and is occasionally used as an assistive communication method.
