About BPM & Tap Tempo

What is tap tempo?

Tap tempo is a method of determining the BPM (beats per minute) of a piece of music by tapping a button in time with the beat. Most DJ controllers, DAWs, and guitar pedals include a tap tempo button. This tool calculates the average interval between your taps to give an accurate BPM reading.

How do I use BPM-to-ms for delay effects?

Set your delay time in milliseconds to a musical subdivision of the tempo. For example, at 120 BPM a quarter note = 500ms, an eighth note = 250ms, a dotted eighth = 375ms. Syncing delay to tempo creates rhythmically coherent echo effects that sit naturally in the mix.

Why do I need at least 4 taps?

The first tap starts the timer. With only 2–3 taps, small timing variations skew the average significantly. After 4+ taps, the rolling average stabilizes and gives a reliable BPM reading. Tapping to 8 or more beats gives the most accurate result.

What is the BPM range for common music genres?

Hip-hop typically sits at 80–100 BPM, house music at 120–130, techno at 130–150, drum and bass at 160–180, and ambient often below 80 BPM. The genre reference panel above shows typical ranges to help you identify a track's style from its tempo.
